Teens who Experienced Physical Dating Violence

This indicator shows the percentage of high school students that dated someone in the past year who experienced physical dating violence by someone they were dating or going out with, one or more times during the past year. Physical dating violence includes being physically hurt on purpose, though such things as being hit, slammed into something, or injured with an object or weapon.

Why is this important?

Domestic, or dating, violence occurs when one person in an intimate relationship uses physical violence to control or dominate the other person. It can happen inside or outside the home, and can occur among couples of all backgrounds. In families that experience domestic violence, children are oftentimes also abused; even children who have not been targeted themselves but who witness domestic violence tend to develop emotional, behavioral, and academic problems. Children raised in violent family environments are at risk of becoming victims or abusers themselves as they grow older.

Many physical dating violence incidents are never reported to law enforcement. The incidents that are reported to law enforcement may represent those that are the most serious and that require the most attention from public safety officials.
