McREL Balanced Leadership - School Leadership Review Protocol

A Good Idea

Description

Balanced Leadership is a professional development program for school principals and other current and aspiring school leaders in schools serving kindergarten through grade 12. School leaders participate in professional development sessions with trained facilitators over one or two years, practice what they learn between sessions, and can receive additional coaching and online support. McREL International, the company that developed the Balanced Leadership program, based the framework and content of the professional development on research identifying key actions and behaviors of school leaders that are associated with improved student outcomes.

Goal / Mission

McREL is a nonprofit, nonpartisan education research, development, and service organization that helps schools, districts, and education agencies improve outcomes for all students. We help school and system clients in all kinds of communities analyze their performance, identify the root causes of challenges, build their staff capacities, and find the under-used bright spots they can scale up to make an even bigger difference for every student.

Results / Accomplishments

Studies have shown that an increase of one standard deviation in a principal's ability (measured by 21 key leadership responsibilities) would translate into an increase of student achievement by 10 percentile points.
