This indicators shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 population due to septicemia. Septicemia includes streptococcal septicemia and other septicemia.
Why is this important?
Sepsis is the body's reaction to infection. It occurs when an infection that a person already has in his or her body causes an extreme response by the body that triggers a chain reaction which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. The signs and symptoms include high heart rate, fever, shivering, extreme paint, sweaty skin, disorientation, and shortness of breath. Anyone can get an infection and any infection can lead to sepsis, but adults 65 years of age and older, people with weakened immune systems, people with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, lung disease, and kidney disease, and children younger than one are at highest risk.
